Gums and Mints
Yeah! We made it through and are on the cusp of another new year. New Year is a time of endings turning into new beginnings. It is a time of making resolutions you really are going to try to keep this year and a time of rejuvenation. If you haven’t had such a great year it is the renewal of hope. If you had a great year it is a celebration of good things. New Year’s celebrations are FUN! Noise makers, silly hats, and food & drink abound as family and friends cheer to the New Year! What better way to celebrate than with sweets! Below is a really fun and easy craft to put a fun and more personalized twist on the party popper. My family and I made these over the weekend to proudly offer our guests at our New Year’s Eve celebration. We used metallic paint pens in silver and gold to add little celebratory messages to these poppers. There is still time for you to make these for your own celebration!
New Year’s Eve Poppers
•Paper towel tubes
•Wrapping paper / tissue paper
•X-acto knife / Scissors
•Pin or needle
•Embellishments (ribbon, stickers, spray glitter, etc.)
•Hershey® Kisses®, Rolos®, Chocolate Coins (you can color coordinate these to match your poppers!), Reese’s® Peanut Butter Cup® miniatures/party favors
1. Using an x-acto knife or scissors, cut the paper towel tube in half. Each half will become its own popper. Then cut each of these tubes in half again, because each popper tube needs to be pre-cut before you wrap them. So just to clarify, these four pieces of tubes will make two poppers.
2. Cut a piece of wrapping paper or tissue paper that’s wide enough to wrap around the tube and long enough to have at least 2″ of extra paper on each end of the tube. Place both halves of the tube closely together in the center of the wrapping paper. Then wrap and tape down the paper. Note: Don’t place any tape along the middle portion of the poppers, so that they will be easier to pop open.
3. Tie one end closed with curling ribbon. Then use the other open end to fill the poppers with and assortment of Hershey® Kisses®, Rolos®, Chocolate Coins and other surprises. Once the poppers are filled, tie off the other end. Then cut the ends into strips.
4. Cut pieces of wrapping paper about 2″ wide and long enough to wrap around the tube. Then cut strips down the side of the paper that are about ¼” wide and about halfway in. You will need two of these for each popper. Wrap them around the two ends of the popper so that the cut frills are hanging off the ends, and tape them down. You may want to curl or bend the frills backwards a little so they flare up more.
5. Decorate the poppers with ribbon, stickers, spray glitter or even write the year along the center. We embellished our poppers with ric rac trim.
6. To make your poppers easier to pop open, perforate the paper by poking holes all around the center (where the tube was cut) with a straight pin or needle.
Your party poppers are now complete! Have a Happy New Year!
I don’t know about other mortals, but in my experience heavy, heavy rainfalls tend to dissipate rapidly. One moment it’s sunshine; then, rather suddenly, the world goes dark and the sky weeps in torrential downpours. Following that, in a just as sudden instant, the sky clears and there’ll be an untainted canvas of clear blue sky. The rain would seem to have never even occurred but for the typically large puddles that so rapidly accumulated in those brief moments.
Similarly, Wrigley’s Key Lime gum will blast and pelt you with an explosion of flavor for a short burst of time, but will quickly fade and leave you with only a memory. That, and some near-tasteless gum which, I must admit, has quite a few irritating properties. To begin-that explosion of flavor will stagger you. That key lime pie flavor is exactly what one’d look for when searching for a…well, key lime pie flavored gum. That element of lime is definitely present, and it’s backed by a creamy flavor very reminiscent of the real pie, which one may not expect from gum. Where this gum fails, however, is in duration. The initial flavor takes a handful of moments to wear itself out, unlike many other gums.
The texture is another flaw in this gum. At first, there’s a creamy composition to be discovered and greatly enjoyed, but with every bite it gets harder…and harder…and harder, until you’re almost afraid it’ll become sentient and begin to forcibly rip out your teeth from their place.
As a whole, this gum does fulfill its place as a dessert-style candy, especially as it exceeds all expectations in the key lime pie flavor department. It’s also well worth noting that this product is sugar-free. If you decide to give it a shot, keep the aforementioned benefits and drawbacks in mind!

It’s funny, how the simplest, most concise gathering of words occasionally best describes what I, and many others, feel about a certain thing-in this case, a candy. To prove this point, I found a review from Amazon on Dubble Bubble, a delightful candy produced by American’s Originial, which states:
“Lots of gum, good price.”
See what I mean?
This simple phrase sums up the good ol’ Dubble Bubble gum perfectly, although “I love you” works, as well. These trophies of delicious goodness often come in huge packages, and each individual piece is determined to last as long as you’d like. They’re a bit less than a half an inch in height, and again, just falling short of the two inch mark in length. Good, solid proportions for bubble gum, and they rightfully give off the impression of both lasting long and tasting good.
The taste isn’t exactly unique any longer, what with the plethora of bubble gum flavor candies out there these days, but it certainly holds up to society’s usual standards. As gums go, these last fairly long, with the initial blast of flavor enduring for about five minutes, before giving way to a more subtle but similar taste which stick around for a while. The greatest thing about it, though, is the fact that it leaves no foul aftertaste following a good time spent on chewing. This area is where many gums fail, I feel, so it’s quite fortunate Dubble Bubble doesn’t fail in this department.
Dubble Bubbles are also widely renowned for their exceptional bubble-making abilities. Facial cleaning devices for gum-bubbles-gone-wrong sold separately.

These bright pink gumballs aren’t anything amazing, but they do succeed in what gum should accomplish; that is, giving you something to chew that retains its flavor for at least a few minutes.
Roughly an inch in diameter, this particular gumball gives you a good amount of gum in one piece, enough even to give your jaw that oddly satisfying ache after an extended period of time spent chewing, which never seems to happen with many products from other gum brands. The flavor, which is similar to your typical bubble-gum flavor (thankfully not as disgustingly sweet as the norm) survives for a good ten to twenty minutes, but then dissipates into a memory of that former taste.

Lifesavers brand was launched in 1912, and over the years has built a ring shaped candy empire that is best known for their three types of candy, all perfected over the past century: Lifesavers hard candy, Lifesavers gummy candy, and Lifesavers mints. A favorite among gummy consumers are the Lifesavers Gummies Wild Berries. They are a take on the classic Lifesavers Gummies, with a real twist. Unlike many other gummy candies, or just any other assorted multicolored candies for that matter, Lifesavers Gummies Wild Berries assure a distinct taste for each individual flavor. Each pouch contains a fair share of cherry-berry, strawberry, red raspberry, black raspberry, blackberry, and white grape.
The cherry-berry flavor has a very recognizable cherry candy taste, but does not leave an overly sweet aftertaste in your mouth. Both the black raspberry and red raspberry contain a perfect mixture of sweet and tangy flavor – if seeds were added, they would taste like the real thing. Same goes for the strawberry flavor, which even has that tart-like aftertaste that real strawberries leave behind. The blackberry lifesaver gummy, not to be confused with grape flavor by its deep purple color, has a subtle true-to-life berry flavor that is distinguished more so by its scent than by its actual taste. The white grape is the easiest flavor to differentiate in the bunch by its pale yellow color. Just remove the gummy consistency and it’s just like drinking white grape juice.
With six perfectly engineered flavors, only 130 calories per plentiful serving, and a century of accomplishment behind the product, Lifesavers Gummies Wild Berries will continue to be a top pick for gummy lovers everywhere.
